My Horse Whisper

Shame

One of Jesus’ most important parables is about God’s forgiveness. The story is about a shepherd with 100 sheep. When one sheep goes missing, the shepherd leaves the 99 sheep in the open country and goes after the one that is lost until he finds it. When he finds the lost sheep, he carries it home on his shoulder and throws a party. He celebrates, saying, “Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.” Jesus told this story to explain that just as the shepherd rejoices over finding one lost sheep, God also rejoices when we feel sorrow for our mistakes and want to find our way back to Him. You are precious to God. He cares deeply for you, regardless of your mistakes or sins.

The Bible is filled with stories of sin and God’s forgiveness. Like the story of King David. God promised David that He would establish his kingdom forever and that it would not end. Some years later, David committed a terrible sin. He fell in love with a married woman and then sent her husband to the front lines of a battle to be killed. God was angry and He punished David, but He kept His promise that David’s kingdom would continue. David’s kingdom led to Jesus, our forever and final King.

Why did God still allow Jesus to come from David’s throne when David knew he was committing a grievous sin?  It was because He searched David’s heart and saw his genuine sorrow. And David repented. He didn’t hide his sins from God and openly admitted them. He also prayed and dedicated much time drawing closer to God to strengthen their relationship.

You are already forgiven because you are a believer in Jesus – believing that He is the Son of God. Jesus understood human weakness and felt compassion for us.  His love for us was so great that He accepted death on the cross so we would be forgiven. Like David, God sees your heart and sees your sorrow. His love and grace are greater than any sin, and He wants only for us to learn from our mistakes and grow closer to Him.

I’ve selected some Bible verses to comfort and encourage you. Pick out the ones that feel right to you and meditate on them whenever you need it. Think about them over and over, and God’s love will find you to show you that you are forgiven.

Always remember, God loves you and I do too!
