Disappointment

Sometimes when we pray for something, God says yes right away.  It’s exciting what that happens! But when His answer is no, it’s easy to feel discouraged or disappointed. We can also be mad at God about it, which is okay.  He loves us and understands our disappointment. But it’s important to understand why God answers us the way He does.

When God’s Answer is Yes

Sometimes, God answers our prayers with a clear “yes.” This might happen when what we’re asking for aligns with His plans for us. God won’t give us something He knows will interfere with His plans for us because He has set us aside for a special purpose.

When God’s Answer is No

Other times, God might say “no.” This can be tough to understand, but there are reasons He says no. Imagine as a teen, really wanting to canoe with friends, but your parents say no, because a thunderstorm is in the forecast. At first, you might feel disappointed or even upset. But later, when the storm comes, you realize how dangerous it would have been, and you understand that their “no” was actually the best thing for you. God sees the bigger picture of everything and knows what’s best for us.  His answer is no when He is protecting us or guiding us towards something better.

When God’s Answer is Wait

Sometimes, God asks us to wait. This can also be difficult when we want or need things to happen right away. But waiting helps us grow in our faith and prepare for what’s to come. God wants to have a close, personal relationship with us that will last throughout our life, and if He answers yes too soon, we won’t need Him, and our relationship won’t fully develop.  Other times, God is building our character. He develops us to become more like Him, and if He answered yes too soon, we might not represent Him in the best way. He is still polishing and refining us.

No matter what the reason is, be encouraged and hopeful because God has great plans for you. You’re seeing proof that He’s working on those plans by the way He has answered you. You never need to worry because He cherishes you and will bring you many happy days.

An important thing you can do to when you’re feeling let down or disappointed is to read your Bible and pray. I’ve selected verses with God’s promises, and other verses to comfort and encourage you. Pick out the ones that feel right to you and meditate on them; think about them over and over, and God’s love will find you and encourage you. You might not see it now, but growing your faith in your disappointment will be one of God’s greatest gifts to you.

Always remember, God loves you and I do too!
